FAQ's

Q. I have an Old Town canoe.  Will the FrontRower work in it?
A. Old Town makes many canoe models, most of which will work.  If the maximum beam is under 36" and the center depth is under 13" it should fit.  You will need to remove or reposition some of the thwarts and glue two mounting pads into the bottom.  See installation drawing.

Q. I have an Alden Ocean Shell.  Will the FrontRower work in it?
A. Yes.  You need to glue two mounting pads into the bottom.

Q. I have a Little River Heritage 15 sliding seat rowboat.  Will the FrontRower work in it?
A. Yes.  You will need to glue two mounting pads into the bottom.

Q. How does the FrontRower handle rough water?
A. The FrontRower can handle boat wakes and wind waves better than conventional sliding seat rowing systems in the same boats.  You can see the waves better, so you can prepare for them.  And if you need to lift the oars, you do so by lifting the handles as high as necessary, rather than pushing them downward into your thighs.  In practice, you usually plant the oars in the wave peaks and swing them over the valleys.

Q. How does the exercise quality compare with sliding seat rowing?
A. When rowing with arms and legs combined, the exercise quality is equivalent to sliding seat rowing.  You pull with your arms and back while you push with your legs.  However, there is less strain on your back because the leg power is delivered to the oars through the ropes rather than through your back.  And you have the option of exercising your arms and legs separately.

Q. How do I transport my canoe with the FrontRower?
A.
It is easy to remove the FrontRower and put it in the back seat of your (4-door) car.  Then you car top your canoe as you normally would.  Or you can keep it on a trailer designed for canoes, set up and ready to go.  If you live near the water, you can walk your boat on a canoe dolly.

Q. How long will it take me to build an Odyssey 180 rowboat from a kit?
A.
It takes about 75 hours including painting and varnishing.  You work one to three hours a day, waiting overnight for the glue to dry.  Working a little every day you can complete the project in less than a month.

Q. I live in the Netherlands.  Can you ship a FrontRower here?
A.
Yes.  We ship by air.  Packaging and shipping to Europe costs about $300 at 2011 prices.  You may have to pay duty and local taxes.
