Build your own row boat: kits and plans
There are very few things that a person
can do that will give more satisfaction than building a boat. The
building process is an adventure and a challenge. And when you are
done, you have something that will bring you pleasure when you look at it
and more pleasure when you use it.
The satisfaction of meeting this
challenge is the primary reason for building a boat. Not to save
money. At least not if you value your time. But if you enjoy
doing the work, then that changes the equation, and the normal rules of
economics do not apply.
Most kit boats will be made out of wood
and a wooden boat will have a look you just can't get in plastic. To
some people this look is very important. So that would be another
good reason for building a boat.
Then there is the maintenance to
consider. If your boat is made out of wood and it has a lot of
brightwork on it, then your going to spend some time maintaining that
varnish, not to mention the paint. But if you enjoy that kind of
thing, then you can throw all normal rational out the window and think
about all the fun you will have varnishing and painting your boat.
All your friends and loved ones will be hanging around telling you how to
do it. Priceless.
A final reason for building a boat is the
design. The design you want may not be available in a mass
production boat. If a kit boat or set of plans meet your design
requirements, then that could be a good way to go.
